Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation & Hiking Retreat in Vis, Croatia – September 24-30, 2021

Yoga, Pranayama, Meditation & Hiking Retreat with Eileen Muir in Vis, Croatia

Yoga on the rocks by the sea at Bili Bok Beach, Vis – a short walk from our retreat center.

Hit the reset button with a transformational retreat on the serene Adriatic Island of Vis!

My annual yoga, pranayama, meditation and hiking retreat for this year is on the remote Croatian island of Vis from September 24th through the 30th. Travel to Croatia is currently open to Americans and to Europeans without quarantine, and we will continue to monitor travel requirements as the retreat approaches.

I have chosen Vis because it is far from the maddening crowds; it is the farthest inhabited Croatian island in the pristine Adriatic Sea. Late September is a beautiful time of year on the island, with sunny weather (average 75°F) , a warm emerald sea and far fewer tourists. It also provides a safer time to travel, since it is well past the popular holiday months of July and August.

Expect to be energized, strengthened and relaxed by yoga, silenced and calmed by pranayama and meditation, nourished by healthy food and rejuvenated by the sparkling clear sea.  Yoga classes are geared to Iyengar Levels II and up, but all levels are welcome. I work with your individual needs and show you how to modify the poses to maximize the benefits of your practice regardless of physical abilities or the level of your experience.

This retreat is designed to rejuvenate you and allow you to go inside and peel away the layers of accumulated stress.  It is your choice to participate in as much or as little of the scheduled activities in the program. Class 11 ParsVot 2 W32-18-FB-1 UPEP Photo 2 W40-18-FB-2 ABPPach 2

What does each day look like?

We start the morning with meditation, followed by an energizing yoga class and a hearty breakfast.  Each afternoon you will have ample time for relaxation or adventure*. In the late afternoon, there will be a rejuvenating restorative yoga class with a deep pranayama practice followed by a Yoga Sutra Study discussion. By now we’re ready to relish our Mediterranean-inspired, local, and wholesome dinner prepared by our Croatian chef. The evenings will end with a peaceful meditation before retreating into silence for the night.

* Relaxation or adventure afternoon activities include: walking to beaches from the retreat center and spending time by the sparkling sea.  The following activities are not included in the Retreat Price: island excursions, bicycling, therapeutic massage, a trip to the Blue Cave, painting classes from our host Josip, an accomplished artist and art professor, and more.

Places to Visit in Croatia

I strongly recommend scheduling extra time before or after the retreat to explore the Unesco world heritage cities of Split and Dubrovnik. They are breathtakingly beautiful!  There are so many other incredible things to see in Croatia if you have the time, including Hvar Island and Plitvice Lakes National Park. Here are some video links to whet your appetite:

Getting There

Travel to Split, Croatia airport (SPU) is not included in the retreat price. Plan to arrive in Split by the morning of September 24th (or preferably sooner). If traveling from the US, you have to book your departing flight for September 23rd (or before) because you lose a day traveling overseas.

The shuttle bus to Split (5 € or ~$6 USD) from the airport takes about 40 minutes, and it will bring you directly across from the dock where the Split to Vis Ferries (~10 €) leave from.

You will be met at  Vis Harbour on Friday, September 24th (ferry time to be confirmed) and shuttled to the retreat center.  At the end of the retreat you will be shuttled back to Vis harbour to catch your 7:00 AM ferry back to Split on Thursday, September 30th (ferry time to be confirmed).  These 2 scheduled shuttles are included in the cost of the retreat.   If you come or leave at other times, you will have to take a taxi.

Flights

It’s best to fly into Split Airport (SPU) if you are going directly to the retreat.  Remember that you lose a day flying from the US.  When booking your flights, make sure you coordinate your arrival and departure times with the ferry schedules (ferry times to be confirmed) and the airport shuttle bus schedule to and from Split.   Schedule your flights to give yourself 2 hours to get from the Split airport to the ferry dock in Split:

Getting to and from Split Airport by bus

There are frequent bus services that depart just outside the main terminal building of Split Airport. One of these services is the Croatia Airlines bus – you can see details of this on the Pleso Prijevoz website. A one-way ticket costs 40 Kunas (about $6.40 USD), and journey time is approximately 30-40 minutes. You pay the driver/conductor on board the bus.

There are also other buses running services for the same price/journey time outside the terminal building.  These buses take you directly to the main bus station in Split, which is next to the train station and the port.  The ferry port to Vis is literally across the street from the bus station.  Look for the Jadrolinija ferry terminal for Vis, which is where you can buy your ticket.  They recommend getting there 45 minutes early.

Split to Vis Ferry

The ferry between Vis and Split is run by Jadrolinija.  It is right across the street from the Split bus station, and you can buy your ferry tickets at the terminal.  Journey time is between 1 hour 25 minutes and 2 hours 20 minutes depending on the route.  The ferries are large and the sea to the islands is usually calm.  Tickets are 55 kuna (~$9 USD) one way. Jadrolinija tickets can be purchased online or in person at the ferry dock.

Arrival:  Friday September 24:

  • Depart Split: 5:00 PM – Arrive Vis: 7:20 PM  – This is the ferry to catch for shuttle pickup in Vis harbour. (ferry time to be confirmed)

Departure:  Thursday September 30th:

  • Depart Vis: 7:00 AMArrive Split: 8:25 AM – This is the shuttle drop-off to Vis harbour for the ferry to Split.  (ferry time to be confirmed)

Currency

Many places, including restaurants, do not accept credit cards, so you will need to get Croatian kunas.  Croatia has not adopted the euro.  Its currency is the kuna, and we recommend stopping in a bank or to a Bank ATM when in Croatia to purchase enough kunas for spending money.  Currently, 1 USD is about 6.3 kunas. You will get a better exchange rate at a bank ATM than at a currency exchange kiosk.  Don’t forget to set a travel notice with your bank and credit card companies.
