Il Caravaggio International Airport (BGY)
2 Airport Options to Retreat Centre:
There are two international airports you can fly into:
1. Il Caravaggio International Airport (BGY) – also known as Bergamo Milan Airport
This is the nearest airport, located a 30-minute drive from the retreat centre.
Ryanair is a discount airline that offers cheap direct flights from locations like Dublin, London, Paris and Barcelona to BGY airport. When booking your flight, these connections don’t always come up on consolidators like Google Flights, Kyak, Expedia, etc. So be creative to get the best connections.
A train from BGY to Cisano-Caprino Bergamasco train station takes 1 hour and 10 minutes, runs every 60 minutes, and costs approximately 20€.
Free pick-up is available from the train station on Monday, September 8th, around 4:30 PM. Further details to follow.
2. Milano Malpensa Airport (MXP)
This airport is a 1 hour and 20-minute drive from the retreat center.
A train from MXP to Cisano-Caprino Bergamasco train station takes 2 hours and 20 minutes, requires two transfers, runs approximately every 60 minutes, and costs about 20€.
Free pick-up is available from the train station on Monday, September 8th, around 4:30 PM. Further details to follow.
Travel Tips
Booking Flights & Timing:
Plan for a Day's Travel: Remember that when flying from the East Coast of the US to Europe, you'll essentially "lose" a day due to the time difference. The retreat starts on the 8th of September, booking your flight for at least the 7th is essential to arrive on time.
Beat Jet Lag (If Possible): Consider arriving a day or two before the retreat officially begins. This will give you a buffer to adjust to the new time zone and minimize jet lag. It can significantly enhance your retreat experience by allowing you to arrive feeling refreshed and ready to participate fully. If your budget and schedule allow, this is highly recommended.
Pack Light: Bringing only carry-on luggage, if possible, can save you time and hassle at the airport. It also eliminates the risk of lost luggage. If you must check a bag, make sure to pack essentials in your carry-on in case your checked bag is delayed.
Additional Tips:
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be a new entry requirement for US citizens traveling to Europe starting in mid-2025. As of February 2025, there is no official implementation date announced. Here is a link for more information.
Travel Insurance: It's always a good idea to have travel insurance in case of unexpected events.
Currency Exchange: Exchange some US dollars for euros before your trip, or use an ATM at the airport in Italy to get local currency. Smaller cafes and restaurants often only take cash.
Learn a Few Basic Italian Phrases: Even knowing a few basic phrases like "hello," "thank you," and "excuse me" can be helpful and appreciated by locals.
Stay Connected: We will be using WhatsApp for communicating throughout the retreat, which only uses data, and it is completely free to use for international texts and video and voice calls when on wifi. I will be setting up a WhatsApp group one week before the retreat.

Things to Do in Northern Italy
Lake Como (1 hour 30 minutes by car - 28 miles)
Lake Como is known for its peaceful waters surrounded by hills and mountains. The area features picturesque towns like Bellagio and Varenna, offering a mix of historic villas, charming streets, and beautiful landscapes. It's a great spot for boat rides to storied towns, walking and hiking. Because of its stunning beauty, it is very much on the tourist circuit in July and August, but visiting in mid-September may be less crowded.
Bergamo (25 minutes by car)
Bergamo is a city with both historical charm and modern appeal. The Città Alta, the old town, sits on a hill with medieval streets and landmarks like the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It has a 5 km. Venetian town wall that circles the upper town, offering a walking path with spectacular views of the city below and the Bergamo Alps. The lower town, Città Bassa, is know for its shopping and cuisine. Its mix of history and scenery makes Bergamo a well-rounded destination that is not yet over-touristed.
